The Museum of the Alps – In Bard Fort, a four-part visit to see, hear and touch

The Museum of the Alps is housed in Bard Fort, at the entrance to the Aosta Valley. It covers every aspect of the mountains: landscapes, animals, plants and people. It combines traditional objects with modern display techniques.

Four sections

The visit is divided into four parts, each devoted to one aspect of the mountains.

The ascent. The visit begins with a virtual climb towards the summits. Projections and a soundtrack take the visitor through the different Alpine landscapes: forests, mountain pastures, glaciers.

Biodiversity. This section presents the fauna and flora of the Alps. It uses dioramas, films and touchscreens. It shows how animals have adapted to life at altitude, and which plants grow in the mountains.

People and the mountains. This part traces the relationship between people and the Alps, from the first inhabitants to today’s mountaineers. It presents the traditions, trades and way of life of mountain people.

The mountains today. The last section deals with current issues: climate change, tourism and environmental protection.

See, hear, touch

The museum appeals to several senses. Visitors watch video projections, listen to sound installations and handle interactive games. Some installations even involve the sense of smell. Reconstructions complete the display.

For children and adults alike

The content is aimed at all ages. Children find things to play with and handle, while adults can go deeper into the history, the science and the current challenges facing the mountains. Many activities make the visit both fun and informative.
