Savoy Castle
Queen Margherita’s summer residence in Gressoney-Saint-Jean

There is nothing medieval about this castle. It was built at the very beginning of the 20th century, for a queen who loved the mountains.
Commissioned by Queen Margherita
Queen Margherita of Savoy liked to spend her summers in the Lys valley. She had her own residence built there, in Gressoney-Saint-Jean. The castle was completed in 1904. The queen came here for peace and quiet and for the view of the peaks that surround the valley.
Neo-Gothic turrets
The architecture blends several styles. There are neo-Gothic features and a romantic look, with towers and turrets. The builders used local materials, mainly stone and wood. As a result, the building fits fairly well into the Alpine landscape.
The royal apartments
Inside, the decoration reflects the queen’s tastes. Paintings, panelling and period furniture show how a royal family lived at the beginning of the 20th century. The care taken over the details bears witness to the work of the craftsmen of the time.
Flower-lined paths
Around the castle, the park is planted with local species and flowers that change with the seasons. From its paths there is a wide view of the valley’s mountains.
Visits and exhibitions
Today the castle is visited with a guide. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events that tell the story of the royal family and the building. Regular maintenance and restoration work keep it in good condition.
