Municipalities and the Unités des Communes

Aosta, 73 other municipalities and eight groupings

In the Aosta Valley, local government rests on two levels: the municipalities and, above them, the Unités des Communes that group them together.

The 74 municipalities

The valley has 74 municipalities, from Aosta, the capital, to the smallest mountain villages. Each has its mayor and town council. The Special Statute leaves the municipalities the functions given to them by the laws of the Republic, and the Region carries out the rest. To explore each municipality, see the map of municipalities.

The Unités des Communes

Apart from Aosta, the municipalities are grouped into eight Unités des Communes valdôtaines: Valdigne-Mont-Blanc, Grand-Paradis, Grand-Combin, Mont-Émilius, Mont-Cervin, Évançon, Mont-Rose and Walser. They run some services together that small municipalities could not provide on their own. Their boundaries are shown on the map of the Unités des Communes.

The Region’s role

It is the Region, not the State, that oversees local government. A regional law sets out how the acts of municipalities and other local bodies are reviewed. If necessary, the Regional Government can dissolve a town council, after consulting the Council of the Valley.
