Quart Castle – The stronghold of a family that took the name of its village, east of Aosta

A few kilometres beyond Aosta, heading towards Châtillon, a castle stands on a hill above the plain. This is Quart Castle. It is one of the oldest in the valley: its construction dates back to the end of the 12th century.

Jacques de la Porte Saint-Ours becomes lord of Quart

The castle was founded in 1185 by Jacques de la Porte Saint-Ours, from a noble family of Aosta. He and his descendants then took the name of the place: they became the lords of Quart. Their family was among the most powerful in the valley in the Middle Ages.

Keeping watch over the road

The site was not chosen by chance. From the hill you can control the central valley and the road running through it. The castle protected the family’s lands and allowed it to keep an eye on passing merchants. Watchtowers and a sturdy curtain wall provided its defence.

Eight centuries of alterations

The castle has changed hands and shape over time. Each period added or altered buildings. The result is an irregular complex in which structures of different ages stand side by side.

What you see on a visit

The castle is open to visitors. The route takes you through inner courtyards, up steep staircases and into vaulted rooms. From the top of the buildings you can see clearly why the site was chosen: the view takes in the whole of this part of the valley.
