Donnas is the red wine of the lower valley, on the border with Piedmont. Its appellation, recognised in the early 1970s, is one of the oldest in the Aosta Valley.

Stone terraces

The vines grow between 300 and 600 metres, on terraces held up by dry-stone walls, around the Roman road cut into the rock. The area covers six municipalities: Donnas, Perloz, Pont-Saint-Martin, Bard, Hône and Arnad.

Picotendro

Here nebbiolo is called “picotendro”. The wine must contain at least 85% of it, topped up with other red grapes from the valley, such as freisa, neyret or vien de Nus. It must be aged for at least two years before being sold, two and a half years for Donnas Superiore.

In the glass

Ruby, turning garnet with age. Red fruit, violet and spice, with firm tannins. It benefits from a few years in the cellar.

At the table

Red meat, game, mushroom dishes, mature cheeses.
