Crotta di Prado
Vines and old apple varieties on the shady side of the valley

At Turille, a hamlet of Jovençan, the Praz family has been making wine for generations. For a long time it was just for the household. Sales began in the 1980s, with a few thousand bottles.
The shady side
Most Aosta Valley vineyards face south. Those of Crotta di Prado are on the other bank of the Dora Baltea, on the cooler “envers”, or shady side. They grow between 650 and 750 metres. The estate covers about two hectares, split into some fifteen small plots. Some are so steep that they can only be worked by hand.
Fruit from times past
The family also has orchards. They grow old varieties, such as the Reinette du Canada apple and the Martin Sec pear. The fruit is stored naturally, without cold rooms.
The wines
- Torrette: the house red, mostly from Petit Rouge.
- Gamay and Pinot Noir.
- Whites: Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau, planted more recently.
