Fumin is a red grape of the Aosta Valley, grown here for a long time and almost unknown elsewhere. Its name is said to come from the fine grey bloom, like smoke, that covers its berries when ripe.

Long a supporting player

For centuries it was mainly blended with petit rouge to give it colour. For the past few decades winemakers have been vinifying it on its own: the wine must contain at least 85% fumin. On the map of the appellation, its area lies around Châtillon, Saint-Vincent, Chambave, Pontey and Montjovet.

A late-season grape

It ripens late and stands up well to the cold. After the harvest the grapes macerate for about ten days, then the wine often spends 12 to 18 months in oak barrels.

In the glass

A very dark colour, aromas of black fruit, pepper and spice, and firm tannins. It is one of the Aosta Valley reds that keep best.

At table

Red meat, game, Aosta Valley carbonade and mature cheeses.
