Noussan Vini – The professor who makes wine inside the hill

In Saint-Christophe, above Aosta, Franco Noussan is both a university professor and a winegrower. He works with his wife, Gabriella.

Old family vines

In 1999, the couple took over vines from Gabriella’s family, more than 70 years old. Franco then rented other plots. For years he made wine for family and friends. He began bottling it under his own name in 2005.

A cellar inside the hill

His cellar is dug into the hillside, as an extension of his garage. His vines are scattered over a dozen plots, up to 1,300 metres above sea level.

He works without weedkiller, ploughs the soil and harvests by hand. In the cellar, he uses the grapes’ natural yeasts and does not filter his wines.

The wines

  • “Blanc du Tzanté”: a mountain Pinot Gris.
  • Torrette and Torrette Supérieur: mostly Petit Rouge, with other valley grapes.
  • “Cuvée de la Côte”: local red grapes, planted and vinified together.
  • Pinot Noir and Fumin.
