Pianta Grossa
Wines named after a 396-year-old horse chestnut tree

In Donnas, Luciano Zoppo Ronzero left his job in human resources to make wine. In 2014, he set up his estate in the old inn that belonged to his father-in-law’s family.
The big tree
“Pianta grossa” means “the big tree”. In front of the inn stood a 396-year-old horse chestnut tree. It was diseased and had to be felled. The estate bears its name, and one of the wines is simply called “396”.
Terraces and stone pillars
The vines are in Donnas and Pont-Saint-Martin, up to about 600 metres. The slopes are steep and the terrace walls can be four metres high. The vines are trained on pergolas, on stone pillars, in the lower valley style. No weedkiller and no irrigation: the cut grass is left on the ground.
In 2025, his nebbiolo “Dessus” was awarded “Tre Bicchieri” by the Gambero Rosso guide, one of the highest honours in Italy.
The wines
- “396”: mostly nebbiolo (picotendro), with other local reds.
- “Dessus”: a pure nebbiolo, with notes of rose.
- Donnas “Georgos”: the designation’s red, aged for two years in barrel.
- “Rose Tendre”: a rosé.
