La Toula – A twenty-something winegrower in the Enfer d’Arvier

In Arvier, Jil Martinet is one of the youngest winegrowers in the valley. He was born in 1998 and studied at the Institut Agricole Régional in Aosta. His family used to sell their grapes in bulk. He decided to make the wine and bottle it himself.

Enfer d’Arvier

His vines are in the Enfer d’Arvier area, the smallest designation in the Aosta Valley. It is called “l’Enfer” (Hell) because it gets very hot there, in a kind of well-sheltered bowl. Only a handful of producers make wine there. Some of the vines came from his grandmother; the rest are rented.

A modest start

His first bottle was presented in 2022, for the designation’s 50th anniversary. The first vintage came to just a few hundred bottles. Jil is gradually planting new vines: petit rouge, fumin, syrah.

The wine
