La Vrille – An amphitheatre of vines where thyme grows

In Verrayes, in the hamlet of Grangeon, La Vrille is the estate of Hervé Deguillame. The first harvest was in 2005. The house stands at about 670 metres, on the route of the Via Francigena.

An amphitheatre in the sun

The vines form a natural amphitheatre around the winery, facing south. They grow between 600 and 800 metres, on small terraces. The soil is sandy. The spot is so dry and sunny that wild thyme grows between the rows. You can find these herbs in the wines.

The work is mostly done by hand, with few treatments. The reds age in a vaulted cellar built of the local green stone.

The wines

  • Chambave Muscat: the flagship wine, with aromas of apricot, sage and thyme.
  • Chambave Muscat Flétri: a sweet wine, made from dried grapes.
  • Chambave red.
  • Cornalin, Fumin, Petit Rouge and Pinot Noir.
  • Vuillermin: a very rare Aosta Valley grape.
